The steel rod spacing calculation is
based on recommendations from steel
rod manufacturers on how to set
spacing. This measurement is created
to allow for the fluctuation in overall
length of the rod string during the
pumping cycle. Pump spacing with
steel sucker rods normally requires
only one to two feet of clearance
between the plunger and the standing
valve or the bottom of the pump.
The fiberglass rod spacing calculation
has been created by the fiberglass
manufacturers to help the operator to
consider the dynamic changes that
occurs in the rod string when using
fiberglass. Spacing is critical to ensure
the proper use of the downhole pump,
but also to protect your rod string.
The calculation provides the
maximum spacing needed to protect
the rod string and the pump as the
well pumps down. This spacing may
not be optimal for every application.

At well site arrival, observe the following best practices:
• Review the running procedure of the rod string.
• Inspect Rod string components and validate quantity, size, length, type or grade, pin size, guide size.
• Examine sucker rods to assure no damage was caused during transportation to well site.
• Inspect elevators and rod wrenches (right size/good conditions).
• Use proper displacement card(s).
• Check service rig to be correctly positioned over the wellbore.
• Make sure threads are lubricated before makeup.
• Ensure proper make up.
• Check torque periodically.
